Introduction
In our "Smart Thermostat" project we designed a thermostat control system which achieves the following functionalities:
- Auto shutdown based on human presence detection
- "Smart Control" model based on learning users' preference and habit
- Remote start
- Smartphone App to aggregate controlling modules
Motivation and Design
The core idea of our designing is to find a balance between automatic "smart" control and freedom of users' participation. Under this guideline we designed our system such that it can maximally free people from tedious details of controlling but also leaves options open for users.

- Auto shutdown intend to save energy when the room is not occupied or the user simply forgot to shut down AC
- Smart control helps users to quantitatively describe their personal favor of ideal temperature and control automatically without further manipulation
- Remote starts solves the problem caused by difficulties in accurate estimation of the time people need to get home
- App supports reusing user defined customized mode which will free people from constantly setting AC
